**Short answer.** Up to 3 minutes. Since October 15, 2024, YouTube treats a square or vertical video of 3 minutes or less as a Short, whether you film it in the app or upload it. The catch: a Short longer than 1 minute that has an active copyright claim is blocked until the claim is resolved.

- The limit is 3 minutes, and only square or vertical videos count as Shorts.
- Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 keep the status they had, so an older vertical video over a minute stays a regular video.
- Between 1 and 3 minutes, an active copyright claim of any type stops a Short from playing, being recommended or earning.
- YouTube's upload page sets a maximum and a shape, and no minimum length.
- To keep a short vertical video out of Shorts, YouTube's advice is a wider frame, such as 16:9.

YouTube raised the Shorts limit from one minute to three on October 15, 2024. Most of what still trips people up about Shorts length comes from two details of that change: which videos it applies to, and what happens to a Short between one and three minutes long that uses someone else's material.

![A time scale from 0 to 3 minutes. A Short can run the whole scale; from 1 minute on, an active copyright claim blocks it. Under the scale, Snipri's five clip lengths, the 15 to 60 second default marked.](https://www.snipri.com/blog/how-long-can-youtube-shorts-be/shorts-length-scale.webp)

*The 3-minute limit and the 1-minute line where a copyright claim starts to block a Short, with the clip lengths Snipri offers laid on the same scale.*

## The 3-minute limit, in YouTube's words

YouTube's help page on three-minute Shorts says it in one line: you can create Shorts up to three minutes long. Its page on uploading Shorts from a computer gives the file two conditions, up to 3 minutes and a square or vertical aspect ratio, and lists no minimum length.

The limit is the same whether you record in the YouTube app or upload a finished file, which is the case for clips cut from a longer recording. Anything longer than 3 minutes cannot be a Short.

## What makes a video a Short

Three things decide it, and all three are on YouTube's side of the upload:

1. **Shape.** Square or vertical. A 16:9 video is a regular video at any length, which is also how YouTube tells you to keep a short video out of Shorts. Each shape's size in pixels is in [YouTube Shorts size](https://www.snipri.com/blog/youtube-shorts-size).
2. **Length.** 3 minutes or less.
3. **Upload date.** The 3-minute rule covers videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Earlier uploads kept the status they had, so a vertical video over a minute from before that day is still a long-form video. For Official Artist Channels the same switch came on December 8, 2025.

![Three checks, one after another: square or vertical, 3 minutes or less, uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Passing all three makes a Short. A wider frame or a longer video makes a regular video, and an earlier upload keeps the status it had.](https://www.snipri.com/blog/how-long-can-youtube-shorts-be/short-or-regular.webp)

*The three checks YouTube's help pages name. A video has to pass all three to be a Short.*

*One interview through the three checks. Filmed wide, at 16:9, it is a regular video at any length, while the 9:16 clip Snipri's reframe cut from it, following the speaker's face, can be a Short. An example Short of 2:45 runs past the minute where an active copyright claim blocks a Short and stays inside 3:00. An upload on October 27, 2026 falls after October 15, 2024, the day the 3-minute rule began, and an earlier upload of 1:40 stays a regular video. The length and the dates are an example, and the scale, the dates and the checks are drawn.*

## The catch between 1 and 3 minutes

The longer limit came with a condition. YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim of any type, manual claims included, is not playable or recommended on YouTube and is not eligible for monetization. The channel is not penalized, and the Short comes back, monetization included, once the claim is resolved. Shorts under a minute work as they did before. How an eligible Short earns, from the ads between Shorts to the 45% its creator keeps, is in [YouTube Shorts monetization](https://www.snipri.com/blog/youtube-shorts-monetization).

In practice that splits Shorts in two:

- **Under a minute**, music and other claimed material behave as they always have in Shorts.
- **Over a minute**, anything that draws a claim, such as a song in the background, a scene from a show or a sports highlight, blocks the whole Short.

So when a clip carries material you do not own, keep it under a minute or settle the claim before you post. The rule only applies when a claim exists, which makes clips cut from your own recording, with no outside music or footage, the ones to run past a minute.

## How long should a Short be?

The limit is not a target. YouTube publishes no ideal length. Its search and discovery tips say its systems use average view duration and average percentage viewed as ranking signals, and that they favor no particular format.

That points to one working rule: end the clip when the idea ends. A clip that makes its point and stops gives viewers less reason to leave before the end than the same point stretched toward the limit.

![Two bars. A 30-second clip cut where the idea ends, watched for 30 seconds: 100% of the clip watched. The same idea stretched to 60 seconds and watched for the same 30 seconds: 50% of the clip watched, the rest hatched as not watched.](https://www.snipri.com/blog/how-long-can-youtube-shorts-be/share-watched.webp)

*YouTube counts average percentage viewed as the average share of a video watched by viewers who stayed to watch. For a viewer who leaves once the point is made, padding the point to twice the length halves that share.*

Then compare clips on similar topics at different lengths in YouTube Analytics before you settle on a length for your channel. The [guide to making Shorts from long videos](https://www.snipri.com/blog/how-to-make-youtube-shorts-from-long-videos) covers the opening and the payoff that decide where a clip starts and ends.

## Planning clip lengths in Snipri

When Snipri cuts a long video into clips, you choose how long they run before the job starts. Clips run 15 to 60 seconds by default. Before a job you can choose 10 to 30 seconds, 30 to 60 seconds, 60 to 90 seconds or 90 seconds to 3 minutes instead. Every one of those lengths fits inside the 3-minute limit. The two longest run past a minute, so the copyright rule above applies to them: keep them for material you own.

[Video: Choosing a clip length in Snipri's Studio, and the share watched](https://www.snipri.com/blog/how-long-can-youtube-shorts-be/limit-and-share-watched.mp4)

*First, the Clips settings in Snipri's Studio, as the app draws them, with each clip length chosen in turn and the range it stands for laid on YouTube's 3-minute scale: every length fits inside the limit, and the two longest run past the minute where an active copyright claim blocks a Short. Then the clip Snipri cut from an interview, in two players: one stands for a clip cut where its idea ends, the other for the same idea stretched to twice its length, and a viewer who leaves once the point is made watches all of the first and half of the second. The ring around each choice, the scale and the players' bars are drawn.*

Each clip comes back at 1080 × 1920, the vertical frame a Short fills, with captions burned in. To see what one job returns from a full recording, read [long video to Shorts](https://www.snipri.com/tools/long-video-to-shorts).

## Common questions

### Can a YouTube Short be longer than 60 seconds?

Yes. Since October 15, 2024, a square or vertical video of up to 3 minutes counts as a Short. A Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim is blocked until the claim is resolved.

### Is there a minimum length for a YouTube Short?

YouTube's page on uploading Shorts lists a maximum of 3 minutes and a square or vertical shape, and names no minimum length.

### Why does my vertical video show up as a regular video instead of a Short?

Check the three things YouTube's help pages name: the shape, which has to be square or vertical; the length, 3 minutes at most; and the upload date, because a vertical video over a minute uploaded before October 15, 2024 kept its long-form status.

### Can Shorts over 1 minute make money?

Yes, unless the Short has an active copyright claim. YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active claim of any type is not playable, not recommended and not eligible for monetization until the claim is resolved, and that the channel is not penalized.

### How do I stop a short video from becoming a Short?

Give it a wider frame. YouTube's advice for videos you want treated as long-form is an aspect ratio such as 16:9.
