Add B-roll to a clip

Cover one phrase of a clip with stock footage from Pexels: which phrase it covers, how to search for a shot, how it plays and how to take it off again.

On this page

B-roll is footage that shows what the speaker is talking about while they keep talking. In Snipri it is offered, never added on its own: the editor names the phrase a shot would cover, and nothing reaches the clip until you pick one.

Add a shot

#
  1. Open the clip in the editor and choose B-roll.
  2. The panel names the phrase the shot will cover. When the clip has several phrases worth covering, Covers lets you choose one.
  3. The search field starts with words from that phrase. Change them if you like, then press Find.
  4. Press a shot to use it. It is laid over the phrase you chose.

The footage comes from Pexels and fills the frame for the length of the phrase, under the captions, while the clip's own sound goes on.

A clip takes up to 3 video cuts, B-roll shots and video clips of your own together, and no two of them can play at the same moment.

The panel lists the shots on the clip, each with the phrase it covers and its time. The cross beside one takes it off.

When there is nothing to add

#
  • A clip that is all speaker may have no phrase that wants covering, and the panel says so. That is often the right answer for a clip like it.
  • When a search finds nothing, the panel asks for a plainer word: one thing you can see, such as a coffee shop or a crowd, finds more than an idea does.
  • When every phrase worth covering already has a shot, or the clip holds as many as it can, the panel says that too.

Tip: A shot follows its phrase. Cut words before the phrase and the shot moves with it, and cut the phrase itself and the shot goes, because it has nothing left to show.

Save your edits

The shots wait until you press Save changes, and the clip renders again with them at no cost. Add images and video to a clip covers footage of your own, and Edit a clip shows where every other tool is.
