Change a clip's caption style

Pick a caption style before a job or in the editor, change the font, colours, highlight and position of the captions, and save a look to use again.

On this page

Captions are burned into a clip word by word, each word highlighted as it is spoken. You can choose their look before a job, and change it on any clip afterwards.

The styles

#

There are 31 styles: Karaoke, Panel, Typewriter, Bounce, Spotlight, Pop, Impact, Comic, Focus, Clean, Editorial, Bulletin, Kapow, Slate, Poster, Signal, Ticker, Orchid, Badge, Sprout, Sorbet, Flamingo, Daydream, Gilded, Bloom, Sunset, Pogo, Decode, Feather, Lucid and Ribbon.

Each style is a whole look, down to how the words arrive on screen, so picking one changes the motion and not only the typeface. Hover over a style, or move the keyboard focus to it, to see it move.

Before a job

#

In the Studio, the Captions card shows a frame of your video wearing the selected style. New clips start in your brand's look if you saved one on the Brand page, and in Karaoke if you didn't. The switch at the top of the card turns captions off for the whole job.

On a clip you already have

#

Open the clip in the editor and choose Captions. Show captions, at the top, turns the captions of this clip on or off. Under it:

  • Caption style: the styles above, as cards. Pick one to start from.
  • Position: Top, Middle or Bottom. You can also drag the captions on the video, and pull a side handle to make them wider or narrower.
  • Font color: the colour of the words, including neon colours that glow.

13 fonts are built in: Montserrat, Roboto, Lato, Raleway, Nunito, Rubik, Bebas Neue, Oswald, Shrikhand, Jomhuria, Playfair Display, IBM Plex Mono and Komika Axis. A font file of your own, uploaded on the Brand page, is offered beside them.

More caption settings

#

More caption settings opens the rest of the look:

  • Font settings: the Font, its Weight and its Size. A font of your own is uploaded on the Brand page, and Upload your own opens it.
  • Caption length: how much a caption shows at a time. One word shows a word at a time, and Short and Standard show short or longer lines.
  • Outline: the colour around the letters, and its Stroke size.
  • Text treatment: Uppercase, and Background box with its Box color.
  • Animation: how each word or phrase arrives, from None to effects such as Word bounce or Glitch.
  • Word highlight: how the spoken word stands out, such as Current only, Up to current, Background or Underline, in its Highlight color. Background adds Text on highlight, the colour of the word on its box, and Last line adds Last line size, which draws the last line larger than the lines above it.

Press Save changes and the clip renders again with the new captions, at no cost. Edit a clip covers the editor's other tools.

Use a look again

#

Under Your styles, press Save this style, type a name and press Save. The look is kept in this browser and offered beside the built-in styles, in the editor and on the Studio's Captions card, so you can put it on other clips one at a time. The bin beside a saved style deletes it.

To make a look the one every new clip starts in, save it on the Brand page instead: the brand kit belongs to your account and dresses the clips of each new job. A change to the kit reaches the clips made after it, and never restyles the clips you already have. Set up your brand kit covers it.

The brand kit page shows what a kit holds, and animated captions shows the styles in motion.
